BMI vs Body Fat Percentage: Which Matters More?
Both numbers appear on health reports — but they measure very different things and can tell opposite stories about the same person.

The "skinny fat" vs "fit fat" problem
Skinny fat (normal-weight obesity): A person can have a healthy BMI of 22 but carry 30% body fat, with excess fat stored in the abdomen and around organs. Blood markers — cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure — may already be elevated. BMI would classify them as healthy.
Fit fat (metabolically healthy obesity): A heavyweight athlete with a BMI of 32 may have only 18% body fat, excellent cardiovascular fitness, and perfect blood markers. BMI classifies them as obese.
These edge cases affect millions of people and are the core reason body fat percentage is considered clinically superior to BMI for individuals (though less practical at population scale).
How to measure body fat
- DEXA scan — Gold standard. X-ray differentiates bone, fat, and muscle. ~£80–200 per session. Available at specialist clinics.
- Hydrostatic weighing — Very accurate; requires submerging in a tank. Available at universities and sports labs.
- Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) — Found in smart scales. Fast and accessible; accuracy varies with hydration. Consistent conditions are essential for reliable trends.
- Skinfold calipers — Trained technician pinches fat at multiple body sites. Accurate if done correctly; inexpensive.
- Waist-to-height ratio — Simple proxy: waist ÷ height. Keep below 0.5 for most adults. Correlates well with visceral fat risk.
Which should you track?
For most people: use BMI as a quick screener, then add waist circumference. If both are in the healthy range, detailed body fat measurement is usually unnecessary.
If you exercise seriously, have significant muscle mass, or get a BMI result that doesn't seem to match how you look and feel — body fat percentage (via DEXA or BIA) is worth measuring at least once to calibrate your baseline.
For long-term tracking, body fat percentage trends over months are more informative than a single BMI snapshot. But for getting a quick health signal today, calculating your BMI is the fastest starting point.
